The Association of Individual Investors has presented the results of the 23rd edition of the Nationwide Investor Survey – the largest project in Poland that makes it possible to understand the profile of the domestic individual investor. For the 15th time, M+G has become a partner of this initiative.
Who is the Polish investor?
This year’s survey enjoyed record interest – more than 6,000 investors took part in it. An analysis of their responses made it possible to outline the profile of the average market participant, who is a 39-year-old man with a university degree, investing after working hours.
Almost 20% of respondents have a portfolio exceeding PLN 0.5 million, and the largest group holds assets worth between PLN 100,000 and 500,000. More than half of investors systematically increase their portfolios by making new deposits every month.
For the first time in the history of the survey, more than half of respondents indicated that the main motivation for investing is saving for retirement. Other important reasons include passion, the need for education and development, protecting capital against inflation, and building an additional source of income.
Investment preferences
The most popular choices are shares of Polish companies listed on the WSE and ETF funds, followed by foreign shares and bonds. Interest in ETFs and investments on international markets is growing year by year – as many as 66% of investors now have ETFs in their portfolios (57% a year earlier), and 47% hold foreign shares (38% a year earlier). The survey also clearly shows how important diversification is for investors – almost 58% of them have at least eight companies in their portfolios.
As for the investment horizon, as many as 68% of participants invest in the medium or long term, holding shares for more than a year. ETF investors are even more patient – 67% of them hold funds for more than five years. The shortest horizon dominates on the forex market – more than 66% of transactions last a maximum of one week.
Market challenges and sources of information
Survey participants also pointed to areas that require improvement. They see the capital gains tax, the low level of financial education, and the excessive impact of politics on the market as the biggest weaknesses of the capital market.
When it comes to sources of information, investors most often rely on online portals and video materials – especially on YouTube. These are followed by ESPI and periodic company reports, investor blogs, and podcasts.
